This is the 19th year that the business awards have run, and they provide a fantastic opportunity for small and growing enterprises in Western Australia to be recognised for their achievements.

International Jazz Singer, Maggie Britton In a career spanning more than 40 years from 1967 appearing regularly on Brian Henderson’s Bandstand, recording and touring around the globe. Her Royal Command Performance in London ranks as a career highlight. This is Maggie’s first visit to Perth who will be performing at Ellington’s Jazz Club this coming Saturday Night and Fremantle Jazz Club on Sunday. Carina Hoang is a former Vietnamese refugee and award winning author. When she was 16 years old, Carina escaped Vietnam on a wooden boat with her two siblings and 370 other people. She endured violent storms, pirate raids and severely unsanitary conditions to make it to Indonesia, only to find herself stranded on an uninhabited island for almost three months until being rescued by the UNHCR. Carina has recently published a book titled ‘Boat People’ which highlights the Vietnamese Exodus, and stories of refugees and survivors. Carina is now a special representative for the United Nations Refugee Agency in Australia.

Peter Jarman is a Meal’s on Wheels volunteer and has been volunteering with the organization since 1993. He loves assisting people with limited mobility and contributing to the Belmont Community. Peter is responsible for training all new Meals on Wheels volunteers in the City of Belmont, volunteers his time with the organization about 2.5 days per week and is currently 85 years of age.

Cloverdale based Robin Welsh fell in love with Real Estate when he bought his first home at 18. He then went on to purchase 4 properties by the time he was 20, and by 24 had bought and sold more houses than most people twice his age. Welsh Real Estate now provide real estate sales and property management services in the City of Belmont, and he has recently launched a settlement agency called iSettlements. The company has only been trading 10 months, but now has 8 staff members and is looking forward to a bright future.

Clinton Smith grew up in the mining towns of Newman and Port Hedland and followed his father’s path into becoming an electrician. Following the ‘Rich Dad Poor Dad’ methodology, Clinton started his own business in 2008 and now Tic Tag Systems works with some of the largest mining companies in Australia. Todd Harvey is the Manager of Harvey Racing in Ascot, and is the fourth generation trainer in his family. The business trains thoroughbred racehorses for competitive racing, and currently has 20 horses in work. At 19 years of age Todd became the youngest licensed trainer in WA and he has previously worked in Melbourne for top trainer, Mark Kavanagh. Harvey Racing has had an excellent 12 months at the racetrack, and has increased the number of horses they train.

HOW WE JUDGE BELMONT SMALL BUSINESS AWARDS
The Judging Panel consists of business people selected for their specialist small business knowledge. Judges have the right to place entrants in an alternative category, if they deem necessary. Finalists will be notified and asked to provide additional information if required by the Judging Panel.
